AR Sandbox Part 11: Computer Rebuild



 Don't let it's looks deceive you! This Dell Vostro case has much more under the hood than you would expect.

 


It contains the same components as the previous build with a few exceptions:

New motherboard compatible with a more standard form factor

New non-proprietary CPU cooler

New NVIDIA GTX 970 GPU, more compatible with Linux and the software I am using (bottom)


 

Making this build and sourcing components was no easy task, due to their extreme age (at least as computer hardware goes)

 

But the end result performed beautifully. It showed itself to both resolve previous compatibility problems, improve reliability, and allow the PC much greater mobility and protection.

Using linux command line to download software After the linux system was up and ready, it was time to start downloading the software for the sandbox. Now normally, the massive number of software packages and whatnot would be a huge pain to deal with, but, thanks to System76 and the linux command line, this was made a whole lot easier.  to download the files I needed, I simply had to enter instructions to the command line, and the software would download by itself. Here is the command: sudo add-apt-repository -ys ppa:system76-dev/weekend-project sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install arsandbox This would prompt it to ask you some information, which could be gained by entering: whoami Finally, I had to add myself to the vrui-grp group by entering (with username replaced with the info gained through whoami): sudo adduser  USERNAME  vrui-grp   This finished the software download I needed to do while I waited for parts to arrive. Sandbox Part 1: Computer Parts

In order to run the water Simulation Software used by the sandbox, many sites recommend buying a computer, generally for around $600-700. However, due to my past experience with pc building, and some inspiration, I figured I would build my own. I tried my best to cut their price in half, and succeeded. For this build, I used an optiplex 980 desktop I purchased for a very low price on ebay, along with a few components to upgrade it.
